Growing Perfect Tomatoes: From Seed to Harvest

Tomatoes are one of the most rewarding crops to grow in your garden. With proper care and attention, you can enjoy fresh, flavorful tomatoes throughout the growing season.

Starting from Seeds

Start tomato seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost date. Use a quality seed starting mix and maintain temperatures between 70-80°F for optimal germination.

Seed Starting Tips:

  • Use a heat mat for consistent soil temperature
  • Provide 14-16 hours of light daily
  • Keep soil moist but not waterlogged
  • Transplant to larger pots when first true leaves appear

Transplanting Outdoors

Harden off seedlings for 7-10 days before transplanting. Plant after all danger of frost has passed and soil temperature is consistently above 60°F.

Soil Preparation

Tomatoes thrive in well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0-6.8. Amend heavy clay soils with compost and organic matter.

Planting and Spacing

Space plants 18-24 inches apart for determinate varieties and 24-36 inches for indeterminate types. Plant deep, burying 2/3 of the stem to encourage strong root development.

Support Systems

Install cages or stakes at planting time. Indeterminate varieties can grow 6-8 feet tall and need sturdy support.

Watering and Mulching

Provide 1-2 inches of water weekly. Water at soil level to prevent leaf diseases. Apply 2-3 inches of organic mulch around plants.

Common Problems and Solutions

Blossom End Rot

Caused by calcium deficiency and inconsistent watering. Maintain even soil moisture and ensure adequate calcium in soil.

Cracking

Results from irregular watering. Mulch heavily and water consistently to prevent soil moisture fluctuations.

Disease Prevention

Rotate crops yearly, provide good air circulation, and water at soil level. Remove lower leaves as plants grow.

Harvesting

Harvest when tomatoes are fully colored but still firm. Green tomatoes will ripen off the vine if stored at room temperature.

With these techniques, you'll be growing restaurant-quality tomatoes in your own backyard!
